Forage with Us - Winter Edition

Juniper is one of my favorite things to forage in winter! I’m not sure about you, but prior to my herbal journey, I didn’t often think of finding wild berries when it comes to winter weather.. When walking our property last fall, I found most of the pine on our land is juniper so I started researching and was so surprised to discover how incredibly versatile it is!

Juniper berries have antiviral, anti fungal, and antibacterial properties making them a great resource to have at your fingertips. In fact, doctors used to sanitize medical equipment with them because of this!

Traditionally juniper tinctures have been used for digestion problems, but have also shown to be effective in studies with autoimmune conditions and gastrointestinal disorders. If you know our family’s health history, you know this definitely caught my attention! The berries contain bitter compounds that aid in digestion and breaking down enzymes to enhance nutritional absorption.

Historically, pine was burned as incense in sick rooms to strengthen the healing process. According to herbal guides, pine strengthens the nerves giving energy, as well as emotional strength. Today, we can still utilize this method in our own homes to help with breathing/cold symptoms common during the winter months or to freshen the air with its aromatic smell.

Perhaps currently the most popular way to utilize juniper berries is through essential oils. Applied topically, can aid with skin issues such as eczema, warts, acne, or athletes foot. Because of its antibacterial properties it can also be used to treat wounds, even snakebites! I also found a fascinating study showing that juniper oil destroys candida fungus, clearing lymph glands and detoxification. My favorite use is for a calming essential oil blend that promotes restful sleep.

Another super simple way to access the amazing herbal properties is by creating a healing tea. Simply pour hot water over the berries and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and sip! Using juniper in this way can help fight inflammation, flush excess fluid from the body, and lower blood sugar levels as it is high in natural insulin. It is important to note that one form of juniper berry is toxic, so if you go foraging (rather than purchasing from a health store - I love Spirit of Health KC!), please triple check you have identified edible species.

Happy foraging!
